"Preserving Our Past In Order To Appreciate Our Future"
About Rosenwald Schools:
Some 5,000 Rosenwald schools were built between 1913 and 1932 in fifteen southern states to educate African American children. Influenced by educator Booker T. Washington, who called attention to the poor quality of education for black children in the South, Julius Rosenwald, President of Sears, Roebuck and Company, provided matching grants to African American communities to build schoolhouses from Maryland to Texas. Rosenwald Schools were designed to improve the physical learning environment and provided models for white schools, as well. Twenty-three Rosenwald schools were built in Anne Arundel County. Over time, most of these buildings were destroyed or converted to other uses, and just a few survive today. In 2002, with the remaining Rosenwald schools deteriorating or disappearing, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Rosenwald schools to its list of the Most Endangered Places in America.
